Terms of Use (Android)
Terms of Use and limitation of liability (Kilsat / mileage log — Android)
Last updated: 27 September 2026
Version: 2.0.0
Support: kilsat.tuki@gmail.com
The Finnish text is the original. This file is the same terms in English. If the versions differ, the language that matches the language selected in the app applies. Choosing Finnish law does not remove mandatory consumer protection in the user’s country of residence where the developer directs the service there.
1. Parties and acceptance
These terms apply to the Android version of the Kilsat mobile app (mileage log).
By using the App the user confirms that they have read and accepted these terms and the app’s privacy policy. The privacy policy can be read in the App’s settings. If the user does not accept the terms, they should not use the App.
The App is intended for adults (18+).
2. Nature of the App
The App is a tool for recording, viewing, and reporting trips on the user’s own device.
No connection to any tax authority: Kilsat is an app made independently by a private developer. It has no official, commercial, or other connection, partnership, approval, or endorsement from the Finnish Tax Administration, any other tax authority, or any public body.
Free features (base tier):
- GPS-based manual trip tracking (Start/Stop)
- Adding and editing a manual trip
- Classifying trips (work/personal), purpose, and an optional note
- Trip history and statistics (including per vehicle)
- Favourite addresses and favourite vehicles
- A licence plate locked to the trip when it is saved
- CSV and PDF export for reporting
- A home-screen widget (km / reimbursement, local data)
- An optional weekly summary notification (off by default; calculated on the device)
- Onboarding and storing settings on the device
- A voluntary Buy a coffee one-time purchase (does not unlock Plus; not a donation and not charity — see section 8)
The App is free to use, and the user does not have to buy anything to use the base features. There is no mandatory monthly subscription.
The optional Kilsat Plus monthly subscription is a separate product. The free tier remains. Plus features, the price, and the subscription terms are shown in the app before purchase and in these terms (see section 8.2).
Kilsat Plus (optional subscription):
- Product: Kilsat Plus monthly subscription (Google Play)
- Price: Shown in Google Play and in the app before purchase (indicative price in Finland: €2.99 / month; the actual price can vary by country, tax, and currency)
- Trial: New subscribers may be offered a 1-month free trial, if it is available in the user’s Play region. Charging starts only after the trial ends, unless the subscription is cancelled in time
- Plus features: automatic trip detection and saving, a foreground notification while driving (on newer Android phones a progress bar in the notification, otherwise an ordinary notification), a 4-minute stop reminder. The exact contents are stated in the app before purchase
- The free tier remains: manual trips, history, PDF/CSV, the widget, favourites, and other core features without a Plus subscription
- Auto-renewal: The subscription renews automatically every month unless the user cancels it in Google Play subscription management
- Cancellation: Google Play → profile → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions → Kilsat Plus → Cancel (or the equivalent Play subscription screen). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current paid period
- Refunds: Payments, billing, and refunds follow Google Play’s terms. The developer does not handle card details
- Restore purchases: available in the app at Settings → Kilsat Plus
- Buy a coffee remains a separate voluntary one-time purchase. It is not included in the Plus subscription and does not activate Plus features. It is not a donation and not a charity (see section 8).
Full subscription terms: section 8.2.
The App is not:
- an app, service, or partner of the Finnish Tax Administration, any other authority, or any public body
- a tax, accounting, legal, or advice service
- a guarantee of a correct mileage rate, of tax treatment, or of an employer’s acceptance
- a donation or charity service (including the Buy a coffee purchase)
The starting value on the Finnish template (for example €0.55/km) is only a starting figure for Finland, and the user can change it. In other countries the reimbursement is calculated from the rate stored in that country’s template, not from a euro rate the user types. The user must confirm the current rate with the tax authority, the employer, or another competent body.
Distance and odometer: In most countries the distance is measured by GPS or entered by hand, and an odometer reading on a manual trip is an optional note that does not change the reimbursement. On the German and Swedish reports the distance comes from the odometer reading at the start and at the end. The United States and United Kingdom reports use miles. The other countries use kilometres.
An automatic trip is an aid. The user is responsible for the accuracy of saved trips and can cancel or edit trips in history. After a 4-minute stop the app asks whether to continue the trip. If you do not answer, the trip is saved automatically after a 5-minute stop.
Without a car connection, detection can start from clear driving (GPS). On public transport (bus, train, tram, taxi) detection can sometimes start by mistake. The user can cancel the trip with the passenger choice and select a pause of 1, 2, or 5 hours. The pause can end sooner if the user leaves the vehicle and stops briefly. A cancel from the notification uses a 1 hour pause. The pause applies only to starting a new automatic trip. It does not end the Plus standby notification (see the privacy policy, section 2).
3. The user’s responsibility
The user is solely responsible for:
- the accuracy of data they enter, that GPS measures, and that they save
- the accuracy of the trip type and purpose
- checking the contents of reports before official use
- the accuracy of information given for tax, bookkeeping, or to authorities
- backing up their own data and the security of the device
- sharing files with third parties
- managing location permission, notification permission, and battery settings in the device settings
- using background tracking only at the user’s own responsibility
- the effect of manufacturer battery-saving settings on automatic trips (Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei, and others)
- not using the App while driving, and for all damage if they do (see section 4)
4. Location and driving
The App is meant to be used in accordance with the law and with road safety. Do not use the App while driving. Do not look at the screen, type, start or stop a trip, edit data, or handle a notification while you are driving or otherwise controlling a vehicle. Automatic detection and notifications are not permission to handle the phone while driving.
If the user uses the App while driving anyway, they do so at their own risk. The user is solely responsible for traffic rules, fines, an accident, and injury or property damage caused by using the App while driving. To the extent applicable law allows, the developer is not liable for that damage. This does not limit liability that mandatory law forbids limiting (see section 6.3).
GPS measurement can fail because of a weak signal, flight mode, or a denied permission. The user can add or correct trips manually when the vehicle is stopped and it is safe to do so.
5. Providing the service and warranty limit
The App is provided “as is” and “as available”, without a separate service-level agreement, warranty, or service promise.
To the extent applicable law allows, the developer gives no express or implied warranty, including without limitation warranties of:
- uninterrupted, error-free, or continuous operation
- the accuracy of GPS measurement, distances, addresses, or reimbursement calculations
- the reliability of automatic trip detection on every device and every manufacturer setting
- the acceptability of reports to an employer, an accountant, a tax authority, or any other third party
- data remaining on the device, being backed up, or being restorable
- the availability of third-party services (Google Play Services, Google Play)
The App is a tool. The user is responsible for all bookkeeping, tax, and official use.
6. Limitation of liability
6.1 Scope
To the maximum extent mandatory law allows, the developer is released from liability for all damage arising from use of the App, inability to use it, incorrect operation, loss of data, the contents of reports, or the user using the App while driving (see section 4).
6.2 Cap
If liability cannot be excluded entirely, the developer’s total liability is limited to the amount the user has paid the developer for the App (including Kilsat Plus and Buy a coffee) during the previous 12 months — or to zero if no payment was made.
6.3 What cannot be limited (mandatory law)
Nothing in these terms limits a consumer’s mandatory rights under the Finnish Consumer Protection Act or EU consumer rules, or a data subject’s rights under the GDPR. Google Play’s payment and refund rights follow Google’s terms.
6.4 The user’s responsibility toward third parties
The user is responsible for how they use information produced by the App with third parties (an employer, an accountant, a tax authority).
7. Third-party services
The App uses the following services:
- Google Play Services (location; Activity Recognition as a supplementary signal if available)
- Google Play Billing (optional Kilsat Plus subscription and the Buy a coffee one-time purchase)
- The device share sheet (CSV/PDF)
- Android Geocoder (addresses, when used)
The developer does not control these services and is not liable for their availability or changes.
8. Voluntary Buy a coffee purchase
- The App is fully usable without payment.
- The user may, if they wish, buy a consumable Buy a coffee product to support development through Google Play.
- Not a donation and not charity: Buy a coffee is a voluntary consumable in-app purchase. It is not a donation, a charitable payment, a collection, or a tax-deductible gift. The developer is not a registered charity.
- The purchase does not unlock extra features and does not give lasting benefits. It is not included in the Kilsat Plus subscription and does not activate Plus features.
- The user does not have to buy a coffee to use the app.
- Payment, billing, and refunds follow Google Play’s terms.
- The developer does not handle card details directly.
8.2 Kilsat Plus monthly subscription (Google Play)
This section completes the Plus subscription terms. The app’s Kilsat Plus screen refers to these terms and the privacy policy before the user buys a subscription.
8.2.1 Product and price
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Product name | Kilsat Plus |
| Type | Auto-renewing monthly subscription |
| Billing period | 1 month |
| Price | Shown in the app and in the Google Play payment sheet before purchase. Indicative price in Finland: €2.99 / month. The actual price is set by the user’s Play country, currency, and tax. |
| Trial | 1 month free for new subscribers, if available in the user’s Play region. |
| After the trial | After the trial ends, the monthly price shown by Play is charged unless the subscription is cancelled in time. |
Important: The price shown in the app and in Play is always the price shown by Google Play.
8.2.2 Auto-renewal and cancellation
- The subscription renews automatically at the end of each monthly period unless the user cancels it.
- Cancellation: Google Play → profile → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions → Kilsat Plus → Cancel.
- After cancellation, Plus features remain available until the end of the paid period. After that, the free base tier remains available.
- The developer cannot cancel the user’s subscription for them. Only Google Play and the user control the subscription.
8.2.3 What Plus includes and what it does not
Plus includes:
- Automatic trip detection and saving (requires the user’s choice and, where needed, background location permission)
- A foreground notification while driving (on newer Android phones a progress bar in the notification, otherwise an ordinary notification)
- A 4-minute stop reminder during an automatic trip
- GPS warm-up and a standby foreground service (a visible notification, for example Kilsat is detecting driving), so detection can wake while the device sleeps; dense GPS only when driving is suspected
- Local detection of a car connection / Android Auto as a supplementary signal
- Automatic work/personal classification from favourite addresses marked as home or workplace
- The user’s cancel plus a passenger question after a wrong start (public transport); pause length can be chosen as 1, 2, or 5 hours
Background and force stop: Automatic detection works most reliably when Kilsat is allowed to stay in the background and battery optimisation is off. If you stop the app completely (Force stop or an aggressive close from recent apps), detection usually does not wake until you open Kilsat again. This differs from iOS App Switcher behaviour.
Manufacturer deep-sleep: Some manufacturers (for example Samsung One UI: Battery → Background usage limits → Sleeping apps; Xiaomi: Autostart; Huawei: App launch / Protected apps) have a background restriction that is separate from general battery optimisation and can stop detection even when battery optimisation is already off. The “Improve reliability” button in Kilsat Plus settings opens the matching screen when it can be recognised.
Plus does not include and does not require:
- A manual GPS trip, history, PDF/CSV export, favourite addresses, favourite vehicles, statistics, or the widget — these are in the free base tier
- The Buy a coffee one-time purchase (a separate product; not a donation / not charity)
- Cloud sync (not used in the current version; not part of the Plus subscription)
8.2.4 Payment, refunds, and Restore purchases
- All payments are processed through Google Play Billing.
- The developer does not receive or store card or bank details.
- Refunds and billing questions: Google Play help.
- Restore purchases is available in the app (Settings → Kilsat Plus).
8.2.5 Information before purchase
Before purchase, the app’s Kilsat Plus screen shows the user at least:
- Trial length: 1 month free (when available to that user)
- Price after the trial: the monthly price shown by Google Play
- The subscription renews automatically unless cancelled
- How to cancel: Google Play → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions
- Links to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy
- A Restore purchases button
- A notice that the free base tier remains without a Plus subscription
9. Intellectual property
The App and its content belong to the developer or its licensors. The user receives a personal right to use the App under these terms.
10. Changes to the terms
The developer may update these terms. The current version is available in the App’s settings. By continuing to use the App after an update, the user accepts the updated terms.
10.1 Report profiles
The App can calculate a draft on the basis of different countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Ireland, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. A profile is a calculation template on the user’s device. It is not a tax return, a set of books, an official mileage-log form, or a document accepted by any tax authority.
If the phone’s region is Finland, the report uses the Finnish template. The country list is not shown at the start, in settings, or in the report. Changing the app language to Finnish or English does not open that list. When the phone’s region is another country, the user chooses the report country at the start.
Kilsat is not a service, partner, or approved product of the Finnish Tax Administration, Skatteverket, Skatteetaten, Skattestyrelsen, a Finanzamt, the Belastingdienst, Revenue, the French tax authority (DGFiP), HMRC, the IRS, the CRA, the ATO, Inland Revenue in New Zealand, SARS in South Africa, or any other authority. A reimbursement figure in a profile is a figure and a date stored in the profile. The user must check the current rate, thresholds, tax-free treatment, taxability, and whether the output is acceptable to an employer, an accountant, or an authority.
The mention in section 2 of the Finnish default rate and the Finnish Tax Administration is an example. The same responsibility applies to every report profile. The App does not advise on tax, bookkeeping, or legal questions and does not create a professional engagement between the developer and the user.
10.2 Claims by a third party
To the extent applicable law allows, the user is solely responsible for what they record, what a report shows, and how they use it. The user releases the developer from claims, costs, and losses brought by an employer, an accountant, a tax authority, an insurer, or another third party on the basis of the user’s data, the report, or their use.
This does not cover a claim caused by the developer’s intentional misconduct or gross negligence, or liability that mandatory law forbids limiting. It does not remove the consumer rights in section 6.3 or a data subject’s rights under the GDPR.
In addition to section 6.3, the same principle applies to mandatory consumer protection, damages law, and privacy law in the user’s country of residence where a contract cannot override them. Examples this term does not cancel: an EU consumer’s mandatory rights, United Kingdom consumer protection, the Australian Consumer Law for a paid digital service, and liability for death or personal injury where the law forbids a limit. Mandatory law of the United States and Canada remains in force to the extent it applies to this app and cannot be excluded.
10.3 Languages
The app languages are Finnish and English. The Finnish text is the original. This file is the same terms in English. If the versions differ, the language that matches the language selected in the app applies. The choice of Finnish law in section 11 does not remove mandatory protection in the consumer’s country of residence where the developer directs activity there.
11. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of Finland. Disputes should first be resolved by discussion. A consumer has the right to bring a matter before the Finnish Consumer Disputes Board.
12. Severability
If a term is held invalid, the other terms remain in force.
13. Contact
Developer: Kilsat. Email: kilsat.tuki@gmail.com
The user can also use the developer contact details on the Google Play listing.
